12 Days: The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook

Can you believe that it’s Day 8 of the 12 Days of Christmas Cookbook Giveaway? I can’t believe how fast this month is going. We’re over halfway through December already.

In an effort to liven up this cold, gray month, I’m giving away a summery book: The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook by Rachel Saunders. I’m particularly partial to the Blue Chair Fruit Company because Rachel is a hometown hero here in the Bay Area – in fact, I used her Black Plum Jam with Candied Citrus & Bay jam in my recent Linzer cookies post. Rachel’s local Oakland jam company has been making waves in the flavor circuit for years now, and this cookbook is sort of like the culminating star of her efforts.

The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook is a tome of jam knowledge. Within its over 350 pages is such a wealth of jam-making knowledge that you’ll have a hard time finding its equal. Rachel has over a decade in the jam business, and most of her career has been spent not just developing flavors, but perfecting the science of flavors. One of the classes she teaches here in Oakland is titled “Flavor Construction,” where attendees learn how to put together their own flavor combinations with confidence. In both her classes and The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook, Rachel isn’t trying to teach new jam-makers a skill – she’s helping them build jam savvy.

Besides being a Bible of Jam ™, The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook is a gorgeous collection of recipes and photos. I’ve sat for hours just perusing the gorgeous images, dreaming of summer and all of the beautiful jams I’ll be making once my favorite fruits are in season again.
