Fleming's Steakhouse

I know I don’t normally write about restaurants here, but I’m compelled to write about my experience at Fleming’s Steakhouse because I really want to share this with you, my readers, who might have a tough time eating out in restaurants.

A Brief Review of Fleming’s Steakhouse

A few weeks ago, I had dinner at Fleming’s Steakhouse. At first I was a little trepidacious – despite the fact that I tell restaurant managers beforehand that I have a gluten allergy, I usually end up cobbling together some sort of Franken-dish once I get there while the servers give me the frightened “oh crap she’s got a food allergy” look.

That’s not what happened at Fleming’s. I was completely surprised when I arrived and found that not only have they created a complete gluten-free menu, but it’s so informative that they even explain what sauces are gluten free so that gluten-free diners can change sauces with confidence that they won’t be glutened. The menu is broad and exciting, with delectable options that really piqued my appetite. A few examples: double-thick pork chop with a julienne of apples and jicama, apple cider and horseradish mustard; New Zealand lamb chops; mashed potatoes with blue cheese, parmesan-peppercorn or roasted garlic; roasted baby carrots tossed with golden raisins and toasted California Mission almonds.

Besides the primary dishes on the gluten-free menu, the following sauces are also gluten-free:

  • Peppercorn
  • Madeira
  • Béarnaise
  • Lemon Butter
  • Lobster Sauce
  • Jalapeño Pepper Sauce
  • Horseradish Cream
  • Horseradish Mustard
  • “F17” Steak Sauce
  • Champagne Mint
  • Porcini Mushroom Sauce
  • Smoked Jalapeño Aioli

I had the main filet with the carrots and mashed potatoes that I mention above. My friend had the special, which was a filet that came with perfectly-cooked prawns and a colorful salad. Both of our meals were superb, and the wine pairings recommended by the server were dead-on. We both really enjoyed our meals and left so full that we nearly had to roll ourselves out of the place.

The Verdict

Like I said, I don’t review restaurants often. It’s just not part of my blogging gestalt. But if you’re a gluten free diner and you’re looking for a great dinner and a lovely wine selection, I recommend you check out Fleming’s. If you do follow me recommendation and go check it out for yourself, please comment here and let me know what you think.

A note on gluten free dining

As always, it’s always a good idea to call a restaurant beforehand to let them know you have special dietary needs, and you need to be sure to explain your food sensitivities with your server to let them know you’ll need your prepared with clean equipment. Just because a restaurants has a gluten free menu doesn’t mean that you can skip the necessary steps to keep yourself from getting sick.

I have not park taken in Flemings myself, but I have a friend that works in an industry were they are in and out of dining establishments all of the time, and he stated that their happy hour has some of the best food deals he has ever seen. Guess I am now going to have to visit.

Wow, I had no idea Fleming’s was so accommodating and responsive! We used to live near the Edgewater, NJ branch and my dad was a BIG fan of the wine list. He whiled away many an hour there waiting for me to get home from the city…

What kind of a question is that, “Love steak?” (!!!) I’m in – and there’s a Flemings just around the corner from me here in Tucson ; )

Hah! Just before I saw your blog, I set up a time to photograph my local Fleming’s food (Houston) so that I can do a review on my own gluten-free site! Stay tuned… well it will pretty much say what you said. I will be sure to link to this blog entry, once mine is posted!

The Fleming’s near us is about an hour’s drive, but if it’s as fantastic as you’re saying, I definitely think it’d be worth the drive!

Wow, Fleming’s sounds like a GF foodie’s dreamland! I live right near the one in Edgewater but have never found a reason to try it. As a food connoisseur (haha, I wish!), I’d love to give it a try. My mouth was drooling over the menu!

posted the link about Flemings Steakhouse gift cert. Have never been, but sound like a great restaurant to try with my husband who also is GF. Since we are both Celiac, we are always looking for a great spot to go!

I do not have celiac disease, but I have wondered if I might have gluten issues nonetheless, so I try to cut down on wheat and other gluten-containing foods as much as possible. Fleming’s sounds wonderful! Only problem is that I’m currently vegetarian (for the last few months). But if I won, my very carnivorous husband would be thrilled and their salads sound scrumptious, so I would still be happy!

Wow! If the word gets out – it’s certainly going to help their business grow. A lot of people aren’t necessarily gluten intolerant but just want to avoid it if possible from a health point of view. Thanks for the review – I’ll have to see if there’s a Fleming’s in Las Vegas where I live.

Thanks for providing so much information on the Gluten-free menu at Flemings! I had no idea they had such a variety of options for entrees & sauces. There’s not a Flemings in my area anymore, but I’ll be traveling this weekend and would love to use this certificate while out of town. Thanks!

We have lots of B&B guests who are require gluten-free food, but I do not know of one local restaurant on Cape Cod that offers a gluten-free menu. That is truly exceptional.

good to hear Fleming’s is accommodating to gluten free diets. in the past, I’ve found that they are also, even as a steakhouse, accommodating to vegetarian members of a dining group. good for them!
