It’s Day 11 of the 12 Days of Christmas Cookbook Giveaway, and today I’m giving away a great book for those of us who value knowing where our food comes from: Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America’s Farmers by Janet Fletcher, an homage to growing, cooking, and eating local food.
Full of fresh, inspiring recipes that will convince you to spend an entire day in the kitchen, Eating Local highlights some of the best farm-fare dishes I’ve ever found. Perhaps my favorite thing about this book is that it suggests the use of varieties of produce that many Americans might not be familiar with, but will likely be able to find at their local farmers market. Have you ever cooked with Cippolini onions? Purslane? Kohlrabi? If you haven’t you should.
Some of my favorite recipes from Eating Local:
- Grilled Eggplant Canneloni with Ricotta and Prosciutto
- Foil-Roasted New Potatoes with Garlic and Thyme
- Shaved Watermelon Radishes with Watercress and Fennel
- Peach and Boysenberry Cobbler
- Persimmon-Ginger Smoothie
Another point worth mentioning: This book is as much a view book as it is a cookbook. The photography in Eating Local highlights all of the lovely things that locavores love to eat, in bright, rich color that jumps right off the page. Overall, I found it an inspiration to cook from, and I think you will too.

I posted to the Ethiopian lentil dish.
I am trying to eat more local–which is much easier since I moved from Chicago. The Farmer’s market here requires that everything be from a radius of 30 miles!

Oh this is too funny… last weekend I went to a holiday gathering of friends and the host treated us to a gift swap…. you know where everyone draws numbers and then in order of the numbers, the guest can select a gift or “steal” on that has already been opened? Well guess what was hot, hot, hot! THIS book! And guess who didn’t come home with it? ME. hehehe It is a fabulous book – everyone wanted it!
