My spice cabinet is out of control! What started as a corner of a cupboard has grown to ridiculous proportions, with spices taking over two shelves and overflowing onto the counter. They’re a major PITA to search through.
Do any of you with unwieldy spice collections have a solution? I’ve researched spice rack ideas, but none seem large enough to hold the entire thing. This is an intense situation, so no option will go unconsidered.
Send help…

How about these?

Those are pretty cool, actually. I wonder if they come in glass instead of plastic?
I have watched Sam the Cooking Guy on FLN or Discovery or wherever he is, he has a giant basket on the counter full of test tubes, labeled with the spices in them, might be better than the bigger bottles, they are thin and you can display them nicely
Huh! That would look super nice – like a chemistry set, which is apropos. I wonder if they sell larger test tubes to hold a whole bottle of spices?
That’s a great idea!

these aren’t his, but might help?
VERY cool. I think I might have to look into this. They sell those things at the local craft shop for holding tiny beads.
or try http://www.labwarehouse.com/lw/category.cfm?category=42
or other science/lab surplus/supply
or..like at Frankie n Jeannes, magnetic canisters on the fridge
Don’t they get knocked off if you slam the door on accident?
I got something like this:

And really love it! I bought 2 sets b/c I have so many spices . . .
Wow, I’ve never seen those before. Will DEFINITELY have to take a closer look. I wonder if they have them in the store?
Since I buy my spices from so many different ethnic food stores and leave them in the different containers they came in, I found that four large lazy-susans in my cabinet worked well. One is for dried herbs, one for spices I use all the time, one for all the spices commonly used in Middle-eEstern and Indian cooking and the other for the spices commonly used in Asian cooking. I just open the cabinet and give them a spin to find the jar I’m looking for.
I tried that, but there’s not enough room in my cabinet for lazy susans… they’re not deep enough.
I did a post on this earlier in the year. I LOVE my spice cupboard now. Here’s my post:

Does that work?
Wow Lori, that’s awesome. I love the idea of using the wasted space up the back wall of the cabinet!
Thanks
I have two boxes of little clear-topped tins and some magnet sheets waiting for me to assemble the rest of the idea. Cheap compared to the premade ones, too. (try here:
Those little tins are great. Thanks! Will have to take a look at those a store around here.
About six years ago, I just gave up on normal kitchen spice storage. Instead, I went down to the music store and bought a metro shelving style CD rack. I did need to put down something over the wire racking, but now I have five feet of glorious spice shelving that fits nicely along the side of the fridge. (which is open to a doorway) It was like a $25 for the rack and I haven’t had to spice spelunk since!
Interesting! How big is yours? Do you have a link to the shelf you bought?
