Blender Wars: Vitamix versus Blendtec?

by on September 30, 2008

in Equipment, Reviews

Note: right now, Amazon has the BlendTec for only $399!! They also have the Vita-Mix CIA Restaurant Commercial Blender for $498, a pretty killer deal for this commercial workhorse. It even comes in different colors.

A Big Decision: Vitamix vs Blendtec, Blendtec vs Vitamix

As you can probably tell, I’m shopping out blenders. Not regular blenders, mind you, but super blenders. Blenders that will potentially pulverize an ipod (more random blending destruction here).

The two options I’m considering are the Vitamix and the Blendtec. According to this comparison chart, the Blendtec has three horsepower to the Vitamix’s two, and thirteen amps to the Vitamix’s eleven and a half. While both blenders have the same warranty on the overall unit (three years for the comparable Vita-Prep and Total Blender models), the Blendtech’s blade and coupling have a lifetime warranty. The above chart also says that the Blendtec makes better nut butters and doughs than the Vitamix.

Vitamix Blender vs Blendtec Blender – Seriously, What’s the Difference?

Retail on the BT is more expensive than the Vitamix, but on Amazon they’re about the same price. See the Vitamix here and the Blendtec here.

Overall, the above cited chart claims that the Blendtec is better because:

1. Depending on where you shop, the Blendtec costs less than the Vitamix.
2. More Horsepower ( 3-Peak horsepower).
3. Shorter/Wider container fits under cabinets better.
4. The Total Blender container can be used for both wet & dry material, while the Vitamix requires you to buy a separate dry pitcher.
5. The Total Blender supposedly does not need a tamper (because of container design), though some reports I’ve read say that a tamper would be useful and is indeed sometimes necessary.
6. Automatic shut-off feature.
7. Motor does not heat up as fast as the Vitamix.
8. Microprocessor controlled – 100% solid state
9. Easier and faster to clean than the Vitamix.

…but they fail to share the most important information: which is the higher quality (read: longer lasting) product and which blends more effectively? I’m curious about the BT’s multipurpose wet/dry pitcher versus the Vitamix’s need for two seperate pitchers for wet/dry action, and I want to know if it blends less effectively due to its ‘duo’ design.

And if the BT is a better product, why do all of the raw mavens out there still cling to their Vitamixes? Sarma Melngailis, author of Raw Food, Real World and owner of Pure Food and Wine in New York City recommends the Vitamix and says she doesn’t really like the competition. Not sure what difference that makes since she doesn’t give any real info, but she’s a professional chef so her opinion carries some weight.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Which blender do you have, and why did you choose it? If you have links to other comparison resources, I’d love to see them!

Edit: One of our readers, Audrey, was kind enough to provide an interesting link in the comments that might be useful in helping people choose between the Vitamix and BlendTech.

Forum question… There doesn’t seem to be any user control panel on this forum. Is there a way to change how the posts are displayed? I’ve subscribed, but when I receive an email and click on the link it takes me to the beginning of the posts and I have to click thru 3 pages of posts to get to the most recent.
Are there any options to change that?

Thanks,
John

Well, I have had mainly mixed luck with ebay. This time I was bidding on a new one. Apparently they got if for a wedding or something, but already had one.

As for the different models, I know the newest model comes with the latest container made with Tritan. Tritan is a copolyester, which is as strong and durable as polycarbonate, yet was formulated without BPA. And they put a new motor that is supposedly more powerful than previous ones.

I am sure there are other advantages, but I don’t know much about the previous models.

Call me paranoid, but I just don’t trust the plastics. I think it’s too likely the non-bpa plastics have something else nasty in them. Glass and stainless seem less likely to leach anything into the foods especially under heat.

Looking to answer my own question, I came across this site which has a bit about how there’s not difference between the older and newer models but it’s only so convincing, it’s dated and there’s no comments. I don’t know how much faith to put into it.

As for Ebay, call me suspicious, but I don’t put any stock into the “story” behind the sale…I just pay attention to the seller’s rating, pics, etc. Also I ask questions. Especially on used items. I’m sure there are good deals out there. It looks like the 3600 w/stainless container has been going for $100 to $200.

Regarding health and safety of the container, I have made the following obversations 1) With the blend-tec, after just a few uses, the container got dull and scratchy looking. This may be because the contents are being bombarded around a square configuration which causes more friction. The vitamix container has more of a round shape. After many uses I have not noticed any scratching or dulling of the container.Contents spins around vitamix container more efficently

I’ve used both and i’m not biased. But one is much better than the other, like all chefs say, but i’ll explain why it’s the best for your home and for any person or family!!
First off, HP doesn’t matter when you go past 2HP. 2 is all you need. You’ll see why.

I guarantee you, if you read the following, you will completely agree that the Vita-Mix is not only better, but MUCH better on every level: ease of use, versatility, reliability/durability, and even warranty (yes warranty, even though there both standard, vita-mix pays for shipping both ways and second days it back to you if something goes wrong. Blendtec makes you pay shpping!)

First off, the Vita-Mix can do anything the blendtec can, and blendtec definately cannot not do everything the vita-mix.

EASE OF USE: With Vita-mix- On/Off, Variable speed dial, high speed switch. That’s all it has. That makes things so much easier for salsa. blend garlic, cilantro, onion at high speed, throw your tomatoes in last on slow speed. Make a chunky salsa, thin salsa, you control the exact speed of that variable speed. Quickly and easily. after you make your soup, you can throw in a cooked chicken breast, use variable and turn it up til its chopped, or shredded, turn it back down to “1″ to stir your soup, and mix in veggies. SUPER Simple. Now theres no such thing as a one button chop like all other blenders. If you chop something hard, you turn up variable, if its soft- slower speed. Blendtec has buttons, it ends up being much more of a pain than helpful!!

I asked a blendtec demo guy what to do about frozen strawberries not being broken down in the blendtec (i mean it has 3hp, right-well vita-mix breaks it down everytime and blendtec can’t? What’s the deal). Well, it doesn’t have tamper. Vita-mix does. So when they say they don’t “need a tamper”- it’s a patent and they wish they had it. He told me to put those big frozen strawberries in the microwave. Okay first off, that’s a pain. Second off, you kill enzymes of anything microwaved!

Also, watch a blendtec demo, they cut things up into small bits and pieces. Vita-mix doesn’t. That saves you more time at home and keeps you from pulling out the cutting board and cutting things in halves or quartering.. Heck, you can throw a whole apple or 2 into the vitamix , and I mean whole, no cutting- use the tamper stick and boom you have apple sauce in 30-40 secs. By the time your done pulling out the cutting board with your blendtec, i’m done.
This is a HUGE advantage of for vita-mix. Since you can throw in big pieces of frozen stuff..the vita-mix is like a food saver. THROW ANY frozen veggies or fruits going bad in a few days into the freezer before they go bad…throw them into smoothies later. Let’s say whole frozen bananas for instance. vitamix you pound them down there, no chunks, guaranteed. Blendtec doesn’t guarantee those chunks out. Baby food: throw in whole tall carrots, vitamix handles that- blendtec doesn’t. Blendtec is basically a great blender. But vita-mix is the best everything. Blendtec wishes it had a tamper. Let’s say baked potatoes to mashed potatoes. With blendtec, machine won’t pull that down, vita-mix makes mashed potatoes in 5-10 secs max…and on a medium speed. again, 3hp means nothing. 3hp with blendtec is actually too much because those soups come out TOO FROTHY. It whips in too much air. Vita-mix is perfect. Peanut butter , and all types of butters and hummus are so much easier in a vita-mix..my goodness I can’t even begin to tell you. That tamper stick is huge.

those ice creams with vita-mix can be so thick from all the ice since you have to have a lot of ICE. I’m telling you, pretty much eliminate the good ice cream recipes from the blendtec. All the good ones possible with the vita-mix just aren’t the same with the blendtec. Every ice cream I do I throw in spinach, carrots, cabbage, zuch and yellow squash and you don’t taste it or see it. Since the vita-mix has the tamper to push everything down with the ice. Blendtec def. can’t give the same consistency with sorbets and ice creams. There basic ice creams with blendtech are okay and that’s about it.

They use vita-mix at carribou, jamba juice, orange julious, smoothie king, apple bees, tgifridays. Starbucks used vita-mix for a while, switched to blendtec because they raved how much better likethey always do..but guess what, starbucks switched right back over to vita-mix one they experienced the differences instead of just listening to the con men with blend tec.
It is rated #1 by consumer reports every time. It is rated #1 by consumer’s digest too.

Blendtec is noticeable LOUDER.
Vita-mix has a nicer pouring spout.
Vita-mix has true 64oz blending capacity- “UL” approved.
If you fill a vita-mix up to the top, it blends top to bottom. blendtec filled to the top doesn’t. There jars are shorter and wider but it won’t blend if it’s filled up!!!(unless your blending water).
They are both cleaned easily the exact same way. No one has the advantage there.

Vita-mix gives you get a MUCH BETTER recipe book- it stands up on its own, it has step by step instructions, order of things put in, nutritional analyses, estimated processing time and prep time to take things out of your fridge. Blendtec gives a cheap one out.

vita-mix is a few dollers more, big deal. Look at the difference. EVERYONE LOVES THERE VITA-MIX who has one.. so many people who have a vita-mix say they can’t live without it… everyone who has a blendtec is like eh… it’s a great blender makes pretty good smoothies and margaritas. They don’t use it as much and fall in love with it like vita-mix because they lose so much versatility.

There both great blenders…but there is no comparison. Vita-mix changes more lives, can be used more often, helps you out more, breaks thing down better.do I need to go all day? I could. I’m about to go throw in 2 frozen bananas alone into my vitamix for banana ice cream. You can’t do that with blendtec.

Oh by the way… the one basic model with the vita-mix can do grains. they just have an additional container with a different blade that is MUCH MORE efficient. It circulates it completely opposite. The blendtec main jar is just as efficient as the vita-mix main jar. If blendtec doesn’t need a different container/blade, how come on the blendtec box, they advertise a grain mill?? haha.. I think that is hilarious. That dry blade container with vita-mix for about $100 is much better than their grain mill, it cleans much easier (the same way the standard main jar does) . Funny..

I make soups that can only be made in the vita-mix. I throw in a carrot, celery stick, tomato, garlic with the skin, 0 salt or spice, cilantro, cheese and water.. it is steaming hot in less than 90 seconds because I start with warm water out of the faucet. Therefore it is also more energy efficient since the stove takes much longer than 90 seconds… and it comes out super creamy.

I was the proud owner of the Blendtec. However, after using this for a few months… I learned to HATE it.

I think the digital display is needless and annoying and a time stealer. You really dont need all that technology. It was very difficult to alway have to figure out which setting was best, and half the time, I just used the up/down speed buttons, they proved more efficient at whatever job I was doing.

The lid was such a pain. Lets face it… the Blendtec does need a tamper… for things like nutbutters, sprouted grains, ect… So, I purchased the wooden tamper made for the Blendtec. The lid, which is annoying in and of itself because it is floppy, and the center piece is hard to get off quickly because of the floppiness of the lid… gets even more annoying when trying to use the tamper, which fits strangly in the deep lid, and gets hung up when you need to turn the tamper, or move it up and down quickly.

I also feet the base of the Blendtec is not weighed down enough. There were actually times when an air pocket would form in my smoothie, and before I could get the stupid tamper down into it, the machine would begin to go into a wildly vibrating spin on my counter… of course I was holding it, but nonetheless, it was hard to handle.

I read somewhere that with the Blendtec, you either LOVE it, and swear by it, or you come to HATE it. I fall into the latter group. I hated it so much, I put it on craigslist, and sold it. I am now in the market for a VITAMIX, which I should have purchased in the first place.

I am sure there are die hard Blendtecers out there who would rebut all of my complaints. Perhaps it was I, the operator of the machine, that was the problem… and it could have been. But I wanted to share my own experience… just in case it wasnt just my lack of high powered Blender savvy. LOL!!

I bought the Vitamix a month ago, and love it. My sister has had hers for fifteen years, & never had any problems with it. I use the tamper regularly, since I love to make ice cream & nut butters with it. I also have a lot of confidence in the seven-year warranty, which you can even add on to.
I am sure the Blendtec is a quality machine as well, but since I don’t have one, I can’t comment on it.

I’ve had both. I had a Vitamix for years, but the carafe was just too tall, so I had to keep moving it around. Also, the nut eventually comes loose and is a real pain to replace and get the set screw exactly right.
I have the Blendtec now, and am using it more just because it fits under the cabinets. Performance is very similar otherwise.

Just an FYI on warranties…if you buy your vitamix or blendtec with an american express card they will double the manufacturer’s warranty up to a max of 5 additional years…

I bought a vitamix a while back…did pretty good. I only did the smoothies and soups…sometimes a salsa or chopped ice.
I had the vitamix a long time and then it started to run intermittently…start, then stop, then not run for a few days…etc. So, called the company…said oh well out of warranty…Want to buy a new one? Sorry…no money to buy a new one. after what I feel was little use often.
So, am looking for a new one…maybe a blendtec.
I will take apart this one, see if the wiring is coming loose or some such. Just not into it that much. Someone gave me a Magic bullet, not real hardy…but, good enough for a smoothie.
Miss the size of the vita mix, though.

ps. I did bring out my families old Osterizer…from the fifties. Hadn’t used it in years. Went through a house fire, survived, and still works good, just not strong like the vitamix.
Do remember to put the lids on, man, forget once and smoothie everywhere.

I own a small kitchen accessories shop in Grants Pass, Oregon. I currently carry the Vitamix Professional CIA (Culinary Institute of America) model, which has the standard Swedish motor, which is inside most if not all Vitamixes (all other parts and assembly is made in USA!), with an upgraded housing (in black, red, or real brushed stainless), along with a great recipe book not available with the 5200 model. I am looking into the Blendtec at the request of several customers, but I can tell you it would be a hard sell for me to switch, since the Vitamix is selling extremely well, and everybody LOVES them. My comment is about the wet vs. dry blender container. My representative from the company says wet or dry can be used in any given container. Since dry ingredients tend to “cloud” the surface of the container and make it unsightly when you’re using it for wet ingredients, they recommend you buy a second container exclusively for dry. The extra containers are very expensive, however. I hope this clears up this mystery.

Hello Everyone,

I love how everyone has done so much research on both products. They are both amazing machines. Its a lifestyle change for one and each one has a little something different to offer than the other. I actually work for Blendtec. I do the shows in the Costco’s in Oregon and some lower parts of Washington. Some of the fact’s I have been reading are incorrect and it seems like there might actually be some salesman in here as well for there companies. Now these two are the top two companies. If you go with either you will be happy, now any recipes you make at home are going to come out differently based on multiple factors. Frozen/Whole/Liquid to Solid/ Amount of Moisture in the fresh fruit or vegetables you are using. I am not here to just sell our blender. I do believe in my product but my background is to promote nutrition. Each company has thousands of extremely happy customers. Any questions feel free to ask, I will give you an honest answer. Happy shopping and I hope you find what you are shopping for. Now just so you know Hp3a and the total blender there are two difference right away. One is Costco doesnt carry the Hp3a just the total blender at the roadshows. The Total blender is 3 Peak Horsepower meaning when at its highest speed its using the higher power and Vita’s Newest one is a 2.2 Peak. Now Peak means the same neither will use the full amount continuously. Hp3a has a 1-4 you get a programming card and have to manually program it. Its not that difficult to do. Total blender you do not it has them already done. Hp3a actually is a 12amp less watts. Than the Total blender which has 13 amps. When at the Costco roadshows we sell the Total blender from Blendtec for 379.79. You also get a 7 year warranty when you purchase through there.

Hey there I had never heard of Blendtech till now and have been using a breville and have loved it but after reading your post and going to the company site and watching the demo I have since sent my husband to costco as they are on demo right now. You just made a sale for just being honest about it. I have used vita and did not like it because of the tempar stick. Good job there … :) Thanks for your insight.

Anyone wanting or looking into it and is wanting to see the demo in person I highly recommend even if not in the market watching the full demo. I will be in the Tigard Oregon Costco from 24th of Sept 2010 to the 3rd of OCtober. Come say hi even :)

Had the Blendtec the driveshaft rusted after 3 months tried to have it repaired but what u people failed to mention is that it does not have a full warranty Vitamix does big issue. also never could get the damn ice cream to work, where with Vitamix I could do the demo myself. Needless to say blended pales in comparison to Vitamix. And I wonder what other name or Dba you guys will come up with next. I mean which is it, champ, k-tec or Blendtec pick a name and stick to it.

HEAT IS AVOIDABLE AND A MUST WHEN MAKING THE VEGIE OR FRUIT JUICES BECAUSE YOU LOSE SOME NUTRIANTS WHEN YOU GET TO A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE. SO TO AVOID HEAT PUT ICE AT THE BOTTOM, MIDDLE AND TOP OF YOUR BLENDED DRINKS. NOT TOO MUCH ICES – JUST SOME. I THEN PLACE THE BACK OF MY FINGER ON THE LOWER PART OF THE BLENDER SO I CAN SEE IF ITS GETTING WARM. IF IT IS I JUST ADD A LITTLE ICE.

Well i decided on the vita-mix over the blendtec. The only thing i wish i could get is their new advanced jar for the 5200. For some reason they designed the base differently so they wont fit each other. Its available on their BarBoss/ advanced model. It makes it almost as short as the bt. That seem like a new design that they are implimenting for the drink mixing.

Troy November 15, 2010 at 10:25 am

I ended up getting the CIA from BedBath&beyond. If you sign up for their emails you get a 20% off coupon on any single item, so that brought it down to $400. The nice thing about bed bath and beyond is their no hassel return. They said even if its a year later you could return for your money back. A friend of mine returned a flipup garbage can 2 years later. No questions asked, they gave him an newer model for nothing.

Besides all that, I love this blender. I really wated the 4″ carafe on the blendtec and that almost swayed me to the blendtec, but after actually using the VM I am glad i didnt choice the BT for that one reason.

The reasons I chose the vitamix:
The speed adjustability
Higher rpms
The spline and coupling is far superior and the advanced Jar is better the this one
Better lid and pour design
Controls to me are easier. On/off switch,
Defintly more reliable because of the controls, motor and coupling design.

With all that said, I would really like to try a blendtec. I couldnt find any in the area to check out. ill keep looking!

I was sold on the blendtec at costco. The guy told me it was used by all of the commercial places and it was the number one rated blender. Found out later he lied. I tried it out and didn’t like it. Always got air pockets, shuts off before the smoothis was finished, had to use a lot of liquid in order to get it to work, making nut butters is a nightmare, counts cycles. Overall not good. Got the vitamix and love it. Everything is so easy. Tamper stick is a must. Plenty of power. Used by jamba juice and now starbucks

I have tried the Vitamix, the Omni V, and the Blendtec, and the Blendtec wins hands down. If you read the directions and follow them, you will never need a tamper. I love not needing the tamper. I also love the quickness with which it prepares the food. I never use the other blenders I have. I have them as backup blenders if I ever need one. The Blendtec is superior to the others. It pays to read the directions. For instance, when making a smoothie, put the ice in last. I believe professional chefs are drawn to the Vitamix because that’s what they’ve known. It doesn’t compare to the Blendtec.

Blendtec sucks. Consumer reports rated Vitamix the nber one commercial blender for 2010. Blendtec is a faliling company. They have gone bankrupt twice. And for first timers Vitamix allows much more room for error. Blendtec limits you with the auto programs and honestly how many buttons do u use I guess 3. Smoothie whole juice and probly the pulse key. With Vitamix your only limited by your own imagination. Plus you can’t beat 85 years of excellent service and products backed by a FULL warranty.

I love your site!!! And I love reading other peoples opinions on the vitamix vs blendtec blenders. It’s a mixed bag, but I have found that most people end up going with the Vitamix. As I did… I eventually made my final decision based on the fact that there are more people supporting the vitmix out there online and that there is a longer warranty. If I am going to invest this much money in a blender then it better have looooonnnngggg warranty. Vitamix has a 7 year warranty and the Blendtec only had a 3 year warranty so it was a pretty easy decision. Plus vitamix has been arround forever! Thanks for the review-I love it

To be honest with all the talk about not needing a tamper is total BS, unless all your doing is blending shakes, smoothies or drinks. Then the Vitamix don’t need one either. Seriously, Try making some almond or nut butter. The other day was taco night i said, what the heck, lets try putting ice burg lettuce in it. Tamper was a must, but withing 15 seconds i was done and i was a mazed, perfect shredded lettuce. I also diced tomatoes without the tamper with the vitamix’s lowest setting of around 1000rpms. I didnt buy the vitamix for the tamper, for me what sold me was the speed range of the vitamix, durability and warranty. Tamper was a plus. If i got the blend tech i would look for an aftermarket one or create one. Maybe the blendtec doesn’t run under 4k rpms because they use a dull blade apposed to vitamix sharp blade…. interesting.

Come to think of it, maybe that’s why the blendtec don’t really advertise a lot about dry blending or blending anything that requires the tamper. Maybe its not that diverse. The tamper really expands the uses of the machine and helps if you load it incorrectly, as everyone keeps referring too, which from time to time I do too. Thats because a lot of times I just keep adding stuff i have left over…lol The other day i threw in left over veggies from turkey day to get rid of them and to get the health benefits. Dont even taste them in a fruit smoothie. I keep telling everyone i love this blender… :-)

SO i guess the big thing here is you have to ask yourself what are you using the blender for? If its just for smoothies then really any will do, but i would probably go with the Vitamix Bar boss/ Advance Drink Machine if that was the case here they are if anyone interested –
It has the wider carafe like the blentec.

Im not saying the blendtec is no good, its seems like a great machine, but its basically a personal preference and depending on your uses. Honestly I would like to hear more reviews on the blendtec with diverse uses. Seems like its always a smoothie or something. I do wish i had a wide carafe like the blendtec, but the vitamix is fine. I have big hands and i can get to the bottom.

Good luck for anyone researching and looking to buy their first “REAL” Blender. It was a very hard decision and I’m glad i found this site!

I love your site, I think you have some great stuff to share and always enjoy reading it! I actually decided to order a Blendtec about a year or so ago and the next day my sister informed me secretly that my mother had bought a vitamix for me for christmas, so nevertheless I returned the blendtec and haven’t been happier… I would still like to do a blender to blender comparison!

I have owned both Blendtec and Vitamix and hands down, no question Vitamix is the winner. the problems I kept having with the Blendtec were 1) I couldn’t make salsa without turning it into mush 2) the blades weren’t properly balanced so the Dane thing vibrated like crazy 3) never could get the Ice cream to come out smooth 4) no room for error if u don’t have everything loaded exactly right in perfect proportions you won’t be very successful also I found out the parent company of Blendtec in 37 years of business they have go e bankrupt twice. Started out as champ then changed to k-tec and now they Are Blendtec.
Vitamix gives you the patented tamper stick which leaves alot of room for error and especially experimenting. they give a 7yr FULL warranty Blendtec has a 3yr LIMITED warranty and if your lucky u might get a card to extend it another 4 years (maybe). Also this year consumer reports rated Vitamix the number one comerci world wide for 2010 and was endorsed by the culinary institute of America and has been featured on shows like hells kitchen ep.6 on fox top chef and iron chef on the food network also been on oprah, dr. Oz even montel Williams feared the Vitamix January of 2009 prior to endorsing the health master ( made in china piece of crap DO NOT BUY)
Ellen degeneres gave away a 5200 this week as part of her 12 days of Christmas. Vitamix has been in business since 1921 and nothing has changed, the machine is American made with a Swiss made motor. They are built to last a lifetime. I’ve seen customer reviews on the Vitamix and some have had theirs for over 30 years back when they were made of stainless steel. Blendtec has no such customer base because they keep going out of business. Starbucks recently signed the contract with Vitamix to replace all the inferior blendtecs in their coffee shops. Btw Blendtec are a bunch of liars. They do not have 3hp it’s actually 2.3 (650 watts = 1hp, 1500/650=2.3)
and they claim to give a lifetime warranty on the blade problem is it’s sonically welded to the jar which only has 1yr warranty trust me it’s all in the users guide its not like they’re hiding the info you just gotta know where to look and for those of you “in the know” Vitamix is well known as the top of the line best blender to get.

WTH?! I read all these comments and then went to some of these websites looking for the Vita-Mix and Blendtec. Lo and behold, there are dozens of different models and configurations of each. After reading all this, I still have no idea what to do!

Maybe we can help. Which Brand did you decide on? They are confusing when first starting to research. Vitamiz’s CIA and 5200 are the same except for the books you get with the CIA. Blendtec has a few models, but the one everyone is referring too here is the Total Blender that you can get the 3″ or 4″ carafe.

I just noticed that the Blentec is selling an additional 4year warranty for $110 to make it comparable to the vitamix. Is that not telling you something????
